Men's Soccer Cruises to First Victory of Season with 3-0 Victory over High Point

High Point, N.Car.-The Marshall University men’s soccer team blanked High Point University Panthers 3-0 in action at Albion-Millis Soccer Stadium today. The victory is the first of the season for the Thundering Herd as they move their record to 1-2 on the year. High Point falls to 0-2 on the season.
“We played a lot better today,” head coach Bob Gray said. “It was a good win for us, especially since it was on the road. High Point was a team that beat us last year so it was good to get the victory. We really look forward to playing our next two games at home.”
Senior Chris Donovan opened the scoring for the Thundering Herd in the fifth minute when he took a pass from freshman Jared Dombrowski and scored from six yards out to give MU a 1-0 lead.
After Marshall went into the half with a 1-0 lead, junior transfer Granit Caushaj scored his first goal in a MU uniform in the 63rd minute after Dombrowski found him inside the box for a 2-0 lead.
Senior co-captain Brent Sobczak put the final touches on the 3-0 victory in the 79th minute when he scored on a penalty kick.
Marshall outshot the Panthers 14-9 during the match.
Senior Matt Salmon recorded the shutout for MU, his first shutout of the season and the third of his career. Salmon made three saves in goal for the Thundering Herd.
Panther goalkeeper Eric Lona made eight saves in goal for the Panthers.
Marshall will next face Division III Marietta College in the home opener at Sam Hood Field for the Thundering Herd on Tuesday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m. Marshall defeated Marietta 6-0 last season. Admission is free and open to the public.
