HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men’s soccer team returns to Hoops Family Field Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m., against Eastern Illinois. The Thundering Herd is 3-2 while the Panthers are 2-0-4.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is coming back to the friendly confines of Hoops Family Field after three-consecutive matches on the road. During the road swing the Herd defeated Duquesne (3-1) and Robert Morris (2-1) while dropping a close contest at No. 19 Charlotte (1-0).
Freshman Lewis Knight is tied for third in the country with five goals and tied for sixth averaging 1 goal per game. Knight leads the team in goals, points (11), shots (14) and shots on goal (8). Fellow freshmen Jaime Izquierdo Roiz and Pedro Dolabella have scored this season as well for the Herd with two and one goal, respectively. Junior John Pappas leads the squad with two assists. Senior Nate Himes has started the past three matches for Marshall in goal and has a record of 2-1 with 11 saves and three goals allowed.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
This is the second ever meeting between the two teams. Marshall won the first meeting 1-0 on Sept. 4, 2016, in Charleston, Ill. Current sophomore Carlos Diaz-Salcedo scored the lone goal in the 51st minute.
The Panthers are 2-0-4 with wins over UIC (1-0) and Saint Francis of Ill. (1-0). The ties have come against Green Bay, Milwaukee, Western Michigan and NKU. Four different players have scored a goal this season with Federico Verlicchi, Alex Castaneda, Alessandro Corti and Zach Medawattage. Mike Novotny has played every minute in net and has recorded 42 saves.
