HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Marshall men’s soccer team is back on the road after a two-match homestand at the Northern Kentucky Norse on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., from the NKU Soccer Stadium. Marshall is 5-2-0 and NKU is 4-1-2 this season.
The match will be broadcast on ESPN 3.
Freshman Lewis Knight was honored this week as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. Knight continues to light up the scoreboard for the Herd as he scored two more goals this past week and leads the squad with seven. The Leeds, England, native ranks in the top five nationally for goals per game (1.00), goals scored (seven), points (15) and is 11th in points per game (2.14).
After going 2-1 on the road, Marshall came back to Hoops Family Field and won both matches including a 2-1 victory over Conference USA foe South Carolina. The Thundering Herd scored three goals for the third time this season in the shutout win over Eastern Illinois. Senior Adi Dakwar and freshman Jamil Roberts both scored their first goals of the year this past week.
The defense for Marshall was outstanding as the Herd held EIU and South Carolina to a combined five shots with four on goal. On the offensive side, Marshall had 37 shots with 18 on goal. The play on the back end by senior Jascha Glueckschalt, junior John Pappas and sophomores Illal Osmanu and Carlos Diaz-Salcedo has helped lead to the Herd offense maintaining possession and coming away with so many scoring opportunities.
Senior keeper Nate Himes has also benefitted from the great defensive play as he is 4-1 this season with 13 saves and just four goals allowed in five starts. His current goals against average of .800 ranks in the top 50 in the nation and is third best in the conference.
Northern Kentucky and Marshall have met 10 times in the series history with the Herd holding a 6-3-1 advantage. Marshall has won the previous two matches including a 2-1 win in 2016 in Huntington.
NKU is 4-1-2 this season with wins over Oakland City (2-1, 2OT), Fort Wayne (2-1), Belmont (1-0) and Dayton (1-0). The Norse have been outshot by a slim margin of 98-92, but have been more accurate with its shots with five more shots on goal than the opposition. Sophomore midfielder Rikard Lindqvist leads the team with four goals and nine points. Junior forward Tom Suchecki leads the Norse in shots with 25 and has scored two goals and has recorded two assists.
Redshirt junior Jim Barkei has played all but 45 minutes in goal this season. Barkei has recorded 21 saves and allowed six goals in seven starts. He has delivered four shutouts.
