HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – In search of its third straight victory, the Marshall men’s soccer team (2-4-1) is set to host Northern Kentucky (3-2-2) at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22 on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
With second-half goals from senior Zach Hunter (Marietta, Ga.) and freshman Ben Holt (Knoxville, Tenn.), Marshall defeated VMI 2-0 on Tuesday (Sept. 16) for its second straight victory at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
The 2013 squad is loaded with young talent, as 20 of the 28 roster spots are filled by freshmen and sophomores. Fifteen of those slots are held by freshmen, 12 of which are true freshmen. The squad is the youngest Bob Gray has coached during his 19-year tenure at Marshall.
HEY, WE KNOW THEM
SCOUTING THE NORSE
Heading into their matchup, Marshall and Northern Kentucky have two opponents in common from the games they have played so far this season. Before the Herd beat IPFW (Sept. 15), the Norse drew even with the Mastodons 2-2 in double overtime (Aug. 30). With Marshall having fallen 3-2 to Wright State in overtime (Sept. 6), Northern Kentucky defeated the Raiders 2-1 (Sept. 20).
Northern Kentucky currently finds itself in the midst of an eight-game road stretch to start the season with its contest at Marshall serving as the final match of the trip. The Norse were selected to finish fifth in the Atlantic Sun Preseason Coaches’ Poll heading into the season.
The Herd and Norse will meet for the eighth time, with Marshall currently leading the series 4-3. The two sides last met during the 1995 season, when Marshall won 2-1 in Huntington.
