Herd to Host Asbury at Sam Hood on Wednesday
Men's Soccer Seeks to Remain Unbeaten in Non-Conference Play
Oct. 2, 2012
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University men’s soccer team will play host to Asbury University at Sam Hood Field on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in what will be its only official “home game” of the 2012 season.
The 7-1-1 Thundering Herd will enter the match with an undefeated non-conference record as it welcomes the 4-4-1 Asbury Eagles, a member of the NAIA’s Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, to what can surely be labeled as the final game at Sam Hood Field.
For the first time this season Marshall will enter a match on a losing streak, after falling 2-0 to Tulsa last Saturday for its first loss of 2012. Yet even with the loss the Herd defense has conceded just three goals through nine matches this year, and a win against the Eagles will equal Marshall’s win total from a season ago. The Herd is 1-0 on home soil this fall, a streak it is hoping to extend with the support of a large home crowd on Wednesday night.
With construction of Marshall’s new facilities set to begin in a matter of weeks, Wednesday’s game will give the Herd one last chance to defend the turf it called home for over a decade. The remainder of its “home” matches this season will be played at Hurricane High School, so students and fans are invited to attend for a rare chance to cheer on the Herd while also participating in prize giveaways and promotional events courtesy of Q’doba Mexican Grill.
The Wednesday night matchup will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools, but will mark the second-straight season in which the Herd has hosted an NAIA opponent. Last fall, Marshall downed Shawnee State 2-1 at home. After the Asbury game, the Herd will travel to Evansville on Friday for its final non-conference match of the season before finishing out the year with six-straight Conference USA matches.
