Men's Soccer Falls to Buffalo 2-1, in MAC Home Opener
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University men’s soccer team fell to the University at Buffalo on Sunday at Sam Hood Field. Marshall (4-6-0/1-1-0) found themselves down early and could not find the back of the net until the final seconds of the match, falling by the final of 2-1.
Buffalo’s Geoff Thompson started off the scoring, chipping the ball in from five yards to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. The contest remained tight and heated until the 84th minute of the match when Mike Peplinski placed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal on a free kick for UB.
Marshall finally countered at the 89:49 mark as Brent Sobczak (Brandon, FL) headed the ball into the net off a pass from Byron Carmichael (Lumberton, NJ), to make the score 2-1. With only eleven seconds remaining, the clock quickly ran out on the Herd as they fell by the slimmest of margins.
Marshall held a substantial advantage in nearly every statistical category, including outshooting the Bulls 24-14. MU goalkeeper Matt Salmon (Worthington, OH) recorded six saves on the match.
The Herd will return to action Friday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. as they take on Elon University in a non-conference match-up at Sam Hood Field.
