NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall men’s soccer team stays on the road this week as it heads east to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Conference USA clash is set to begin at 7 p.m., from the ODU Soccer Complex.
THE SERIES: 5 meetings, ODU leads 3-2
Marshall and Old Dominion first met on the pitch all the way back on Oct. 8, 1983 in Norfolk, Va. The Monarchs won the match 2-1. Thirty years went by before these two teams met again, this time as conference foes when Old Dominion made the move to Conference USA. The Monarchs won the first conference meeting 3-0 in Norfolk. The Herd won the next two contests, 2-1 in 2014 in Huntington, and 1-0 in 2015 in Norfolk. The previous meeting took place on Oct. 26, 2016 in Huntington. The two squads battled through the first 90 minutes scoreless and moved on to overtime. Old Dominion knocked in the game-winner with two minutes and 49 seconds left in the first overtime period.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is 6-6-1 and 2-3-0 in Conference USA this season. The Herd currently sits in sixth place in the Conference USA standings ahead of Florida Atlantic, UAB and South Carolina. Marshall is coming off a 1-0 loss at Liberty, Tuesday Oct. 17. The Herd has four matches remaining with three in conference action, including the Old Dominion contest. Marshall returns to Hoops Family Field on Saturday Oct. 28 to take on UAB and then will hit the road at No. 19 Akron (Nov. 1) and finish the regular season at Florida Atlantic (Nov. 4).
Marshall has used an attacking style this season that has already translated to more goals (18 to 16), shots (175 to 166) and shots on goal (89-74) then all of last season. Freshman Lewis Knight leads the Herd in scoring with nine goals and 21 points and is second with three assists. Senior Dion Stergiotis and sophomore Carlos Diaz-Salcedo lead with four assists each.
In goal, senior Nate Himes is leading the way with a 5-1 record, a Conference USA leading .818 save percentage and a 0.65 goals against average. A trio of defenders have all logged over 1,000 minutes this season in senior Jascha Glueckschalt (1,116), sophomore Illal Osmanu (1,067) and junior John Pappas (1,006).
SCOUTING THE MONARCHS
Old Dominion enters the contest with a record of 7-3-2 and 4-0-0 in conference action. The Monarchs are second in the C-USA standings and are receiving votes in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25. ODU is looking to get back on the winning track. The Monarchs have lost the last two matches after winning the previous five (Sept. 15 to Oct. 6). ODU lost to Coastal Carolina (5-2) on Saturday Oct. 14 and at No. 4 North Carolina (2-1 2OT) on Tuesday Oct. 17.
ODU’s offense has put up 24 goals in 12 matches with nine different players scoring at least one goal. The Monarchs are led by freshman Brandon Perdue and junior Max Wilschrey with six goals each. Perdue leads in total points with 16 as he also leads the team in assists with four.
Sophomore Mertcan Akar has played all 1,131 minutes and 15 seconds of action in the net. Akar has recorded 53 saves while allowing 18 goals. He has delivered four shutouts.
The Monarchs have all Conference USA matches remaining in the regular season. After Marshall, Old Dominion will travel to FIU (Oct. 25) and South Carolina (Oct. 29) before returning to Norfolk to play New Mexico (Nov. 3).
