HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Saturday, Oct. 28, is senior night for the Marshall men’s soccer team as Conference USA foe the UAB Blazers come to Hoops Family Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
The match will be televised through beIN Connect. Fans can access the beIN Sports Connect app, which is available on beIN’s website, the Google Play Store and the Apple Store.
Marshall is 6-7-1 and 2-4-0 in Conference USA. UAB is 5-5-4 and 1-4-1 in conference. The Thundering Herd sits in sixth place in the conference standings, just ahead of the Blazers. Seven of the nine teams make it to the Conference USA Tournament, hosted by Old Dominion on Nov. 8-12. With a win Saturday night, the Herd would be guaranteed a spot in the tournament.
THE SERIES: 16 meetings, UAB leads 11-4-1
Marshall and UAB first met on the pitch in 2003, a 2-1 Blazer win in Birmingham, Ala. The two teams have met at least once every season since 2005 when Marshall joined Conference USA. The Herd last defeated the Blazers in 2015 with a 3-2 overtime win in Huntington. UAB won the previous match in 2016, 3-0, in Birmingham.
Marshall has a group of nine seniors that will be honored before the match. The 2017 Marshall men’s senior class consists of goalkeeper Nate Himes, defender Jascha Glueckschalt, midfielder Dion Stergiotis, midfielder Brayan Lopez-Mendez, forward Adi Dakwar, midfielder Tatsuya Takeuchi, midfielder Myles Newhouse, midfielder Christian Kershaw and defender Cory Shimensky.
Marshall has dropped its last two matches at Liberty and at Old Dominion, both by scores of 1-0. At ODU, Himes recorded eight saves but the Monarchs won on a converted penalty kick in the 84th minute.
Himes sports a conference leading .839 save percentage and a 0.69 goals against average. Freshman Lewis Knight is second in C-USA in goals with nine and tied for second in total points with 21. Both Stergiotis and sophomore Carlos Diaz-Salcedo are in the top 10 in conference in assists with four each.
After senior night, Marshall has two matches remaining in the regular season. The Herd travels to Akron (Nov. 1) and down to Florida Atlantic (Nov. 4) to end the season before the Conference USA Tournament.
UAB sits in seventh place in the conference standings with one more C-USA match to play after taking on Marshall. The Blazers close out the season in Birmingham against South Carolina. One win or two ties and Florida Atlantic losing to Marshall (Nov. 4) to end the season will put UAB in the conference tournament. The Blazer’s only conference win this season was a 2-0 victory over Florida Atlantic on Oct. 21.
Ten different players have scored a goal for UAB this season with sophomore Massino Ferrin leading the way with five. Redshirt freshman James Teal has been the mainstay in goal this season. Teal has played 1,311 minutes of a possible 1,340. He has recorded 57 saves while allowing 16 goals. Teal has five wins with four coming as shutouts.
