AKRON, Ohio – The Marshall men’s soccer team hits the road this week to take on the No. 10 Akron Zips in the Herd’s final non-conference match of the season. Marshall and Akron take the field Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
The Thundering Herd is 7-7-1 overall and the tenth ranked Zips are 12-3-1. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
THE SERIES: Nine meetings, Akron leads 6-1-2
Marshall and Akron first met on the pitch in 1997 in Akron. The contest ended in a scoreless draw. The teams met every year until 2004, Marshall’s last season in the Mid-American Conference. The two teams have not met since. The Herd’s lone win over the Zips came in 2000, a 3-2 victory in Huntington.
Marshall punched its ticket to the Conference USA Tournament Saturday, Oct.28, with a 2-1 double overtime victory against the UAB Blazers. The Herd scored first in the exciting senior night battle as junior John Pappas found the back of the net off a deflection in the 41st minute. UAB tied the match in the 76th minute. The game was a back-and-forth battle over the final 24 minutes of regulation, through the first overtime and the bulk of the second overtime.
With the clock winding down to under a minute, senior Cory Shimensky sent a long pass downfield to senior Adi Dakwar. Dakwar kept the ball from a UAB defender, made a turn toward the left side of the 18 yard box and then sent a curling strike to the upper right corner of the net for the winner. The goal came just 17 seconds away from declaring the match a draw. Dakwar transferred to Marshall in 2016 after spending two seasons with Akron.
Senior goalkeeper Nate Himes earned his sixth win of the season recording nine saves and allowing just the lone goal.
Akron has had nine contests with ranked teams this season. The Zips are 6-3-0 in those matches. Akron defeated No. 10 Washington (2-0), No. 21 UMASS Lowell (5-0), No. 1 Michigan State (4-1), No. 8 Notre Dame (2-0), No. 20 Pittsburgh (3-0) and No. 25 West Virginia (4-0). Akron has won its past six matches and allowed just two goals during that stretch.
Senior forward Stuart Holthusen racked up the accolades this week being named the MAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, and named to the Top Drawer Soccer and the College Soccer News teams of the week. Holthusen scored a hat trick in Akron’s win over WVU and had an assist in the victory over Pittsburgh.
Akron has outscored its opponents 33-8 as 13 different players have scored a goal. Eight players have scored more than one. Sophomore Nick Hinds leads with six with redshirt senior Sam Gainford and Holthusen adding five each.
A pair of goalkeepers have spent time in the net. Junior Ben Lindt has logged 1,113 minutes with 32 saves and just six goals allowed, with a record of 8-3-1. Redshirt freshman Tor Saunders has played 360 minutes and has a record of 4-0.
