NORFOLK, Va. – Marshall men’s soccer seniors Nate Himes and Dion Stergiotis were honored Sunday on the Conference USA All-Tournament Team.
Sixth-seed Marshall earned a first round, 1-0, win over No. 3 Kentucky before falling to the eventual tournament champions Old Dominion Friday night, 1-0. Himes recorded 13 total saves during the two matches and allowed just the one goal. Stergiotis scored the game-winner against UK.
“(Himes and Stergiotis) both had an excellent playoff campaign,” Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. “Nate kept us in games with some terrific saves, and Dion’s running, defending and his goal in Wednesday’s match helped immensely.”
Himes made a series of five saves in the span of three minutes and 45 seconds, including two incredible back-to-back stops in the first half of the win over Kentucky. Shortly after the fifth save, Marshall gained possession and took the ball straight down the field. Freshman Lewis Knight attempted a crossing pass that was partially cleared, but right to Stergiotis who blasted a shot passed the Wildcat keeper to take the lead in the 33rd minute.
In the semi-final loss to Old Dominion, Himes kept the match close. After allowing one goal, the senior made five more saves to keep it a one-goal deficit. Stergiotis played 83 of the 90 minutes in the midfield for the Herd.
