NEWARK, N.J. - The Thundering Herd (7-6, 0-0 C-USA) held on to win its first road game since Dec. 8, 2012, with a narrow 57-56 victory over NJIT (4-14), Sunday, at Fleisher Athletic Center in Newark, N.J.

With the win, Marshall completed 2013-14 non-conference play, and has won two consecutive games for the second time this season.

Marshall jumped out to a 12-4 lead early in the first half, with junior AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) putting the Herd's first four points in the book. Sophomore Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.) sunk back-to-back threes to give Marshall an 18-11 advantage at 11:44. Despite NJIT cutting the Herd's lead to 26-24 with 3:52 until the break, the Herd held on for the duration of the period, going up by as many as nine points with 1:08 remaining. An NJIT layup by Alyssa Albanese at the halftime buzzer set the score at 35-28 in Marshall's favor.

The Highlanders fought back in the second half, cutting the Herd's lead at five different times in the period. Foul trouble found Victrum and Johnson, who both ended the contest with four each. NJIT took its first lead since the second minute of the game, at 53-52, with 3:13 remaining. A Leah Scott (Detroit) layup gave the Herd the lead back, 54-53, with 2:17 on the clock, but the Highlanders' Martina Matejcikova hit two foul shots at 1:22 to steal it back. After two missed Marshall layups, Suporia Dickens (Freeport, Ill.) was fouled, and sunk both free throws with 0:20 left to put the Herd up, 57-56. After two timeouts, Marshall held on to win its first road contest of the season.

For the second consecutive game, Marshall was rebounded by its opponent, 39-37. The Highlanders had the advantage in the paint, 32-22, and scored 21 second chance points to Marshall's eight. Only four points came off the Herd's bench, all by Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J), who finished with nine rebounds.

The Herd's last road win came Dec. 8, 2012, with a 70-66 defeat of Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill.
