Marshall Women's Basketball Postgame Quotes

Matt Daniel, head coach
Opening Statement
“I told the team before this game that the team who brings the most enthusiasm for the longest period of time would win this game. I think that is what happened. We have to get more up and down on our roster. We knew who UAB’s key scorers were and we didn’t do a good enough job on them. We had mental errors with the basketball. We turned it over 16 times which is very uncharacteristic of us. We didn’t have enough assists. We just have to get more from everybody on our roster. That includes the bench.”

On not fouling late when down by six points
“We missed a free-throw on our end and we were supposed to foul then and we didn’t. UAB’s Ashley Grimes was shooting free-throws and we had one-on-four, but we relaxed and she got her own rebound. If you’re not going to compete in those situations then you’re better off just holding the fort down and trying to keep it together. I didn’t feel like it was the right situation for our team to foul.”

On UAB’s defensive scheme in the second half
“Oddly enough they went zone.  We like to shoot it, but our execution against zone is not very good right now. Our mental focus goes grey in the middle of the game and we don’t execute on either end of the floor. It was a six-point loss. You can’t go grey for a possession.”

On shooting 31 three-pointers
“I didn’t expect to do that, but it is what it is. I didn’t expect UAB’s Karisma Chapman to have 25 points and 11 rebounds on the other side either. I didn’t expect we’d have twice as many turnovers than assists. We didn’t execute on either end of the floor. That’s what happened today.”
