Overtime Battle Ends Heartbreakingly for Herd at ODU|
Feb. 1, 2014
NORFOLK, Va. – Despite a career performance by junior Aja Sorrells (Athens, Ga.), the Thundering Herd fell in heartbreaking fashion to the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs in overtime, 65-52, Saturday, at Ted Constant Convocation Center.
With the loss, Marshall fell to 7-13, 0-7 in Conference USA, and ODU improved to 10-12, 3-5.
“We gave it what we had, but we ran out of juice,” coach Matt Daniel said. “We lost focus, mentally. We’ve been in single-digit possession games all year long, and I don’t think that our problem has anything to do with basketball. I think it has to do with the maturation process. The more we mature and the more we experience, the better-off we’ll be.”
Old Dominion struck first with a three, but the Herd reacted swiftly with 10 consecutive points, holding the Lady Monarchs scoreless from 19:30 to 12:16 in the opening half. Sorrells contributed five during the 10-point stretch.
Defensive resilience created another Marshall run, going 12-to-0 from 11:03 to 5:55, setting the score at 22-8. The Herd kept rolling and eventually ended the half on top, 29-17. At the break, Sorrells had already set career-highs of 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Monarchs opened half on 5-to-2 run, but the Herd responded and re-gained a double-digit lead at 14:48 after Orlandria Williams (Memphis, Tenn.) scored Marshall’s first field goal of the half, making it 33-22. Marshall held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half, with a largest lead of 12 at 7:33, at 46-34.
From that point, an 11-to-2 Lady Monarch run cut the lead to 48-45 with 1:14 on the clock. A shot clock violation with 44 seconds remaining gave ODU the ball, and Shae Kelley converted her first and only three of the game to tie it at 48 with 23 seconds to go. Time expired and Marshall found itself in its second overtime period of the season.
In overtime, the Lady Monarchs found their first lead since the opening bucket, going on a 9-to-0 run to open the extra period with the score at 57-48. At that point ODU had put up 17 unanswered points from the 5:48 mark in the second half. Marshall couldn’t seem to find an answer for the Lady Monarch pressure, and time expired with the score at 65-52.
Turnovers were detrimental for the Herd in overtime, as ODU converted six points off Marshall errors. The Lady Monarchs also handily out-rebounded the Herd in overtime, grabbing four rebounds to Marshall’s one.
Sorrells was just one rebound away from a double-double with career-highs 13 points and nine boards. Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) and AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Next, Marshall will return to Cam Henderson Center to host a pair of Conference USA foes, starting with East Carolina, Feb. 5, then Louisiana Tech, Feb. 8. For all the latest information about Marshall women’s basketball, follow @HerdWBB on Twitter.
