EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Down 70-57 with just over ten minutes left, Evansville made a furious charge, going on a 26-0 run, to down the Thundering Herd women's basketball team, 89-77, Friday night at Roberts Stadium.
Marshall (0-1) held a lead of as many as 16 points in the second half, leading 62-46 with just over 16 minutes left before the run by the Purple Aces (1-0).
Alix Barnette led Marshall, scoring 15 points. Meg Withrow also had a solid game, notching 13 points to go along with six assists. She also led all players with five steals.
Marshall was lights out in the first half, shooting 60% (21-35) from the field, including 62.5% (5-8) from three-point range. With 51 points scored in the half, it marked the first time MU had accomplished that feat since scoring 54 in the second half against UAB in the 2005-06 season.
Evansville's defense had a strong second half, holding Marshall to 31% shooting and 26 points. They also held the Herd without a point for an eight minute stretch.
Leading the Aces was Rebekah Parker, who had a game-high 22 points. Shannon Novosel also had a stellar game, tallying 20 points to go along with 12 boards.
Aside from Barnette and Withrow, Alyssa Hammond and Casey Baker also made solid contributions. Hammond had 11 points and five rebounds while Baker had ten points and four steals.
The Herd will play two more games in the Preseason WNIT. MU's next opponent will be determined on Saturday after all opening round tournament games have been played. Herdzone.com will have the information as soon as it is available.
