FARMVILLE, Va.- Marshall's Tynikki Crook's 13 second half points led the Thundering Herd women's basketball team to a 62-54 victory against Longwood in the final game of the Lancer Classic on Saturday night at Willett Hall. Crook finished the night with a team-high 16 points and 11 rebounds for her 19th career double-double.
MU grabs its first victory of the season, improving to 1-1, while the Lancers fall to 1-1 following its win against Campbell on Friday night.
"Very excited for our girls to have weathered the storm. It is very difficult to win on the road, especially playing back-to-back games, with the limited depth that we have. We had a lot of freshmen step up for us tonight," head coach Royce Chadwick commented. "Everybody made a contribution and it resulted in a good team win."
In a game decided by runs, both teams struggled to find their rhythm in an opening 10 minutes that featured 15 fouls and 12 turnovers.
Rashedah Henriques and Veronica Ruiz combined for the Thundering Herd's first eight points, but Longwood's Morgan Smith knocked one down from behind the arc and followed with a layup in the subsequent possession to give the Lancers its first lead of the contest at 10-8.
Brittanni Billups layup with 5:37 left in the half would spark Longwood to a 13-2 run. Billups would connect for two free throws and a short jumper in the 4:15 span, giving the Lancers a 25-19 advantage.
Marshall's Lateidra Elliot and Alaya Mitchell would respond, converting layups on back-to-back possessions bringing the Herd within two, at 25-23, going into the break.
The Thundering Herd would continue its spurt in the opening minutes of the second stanza, jumping out to a 36-29 lead, following a 14-3 run that was capped off by a Heneriques three-pointer, her second of the half.
Billups and Crook battled back and forth, scoring 15 of their 27 points in the second half but Crooks turnaround jumper with 11:40 left to play would push the lead to double-digits.
Bria White's jumper at 6:17 brought Longwood within four but that's as close as the Lancers would come.
The Herd drained five free throws in the final 1:50 to solidify the victory, defeating the Lancers for the second time in as many tries.
Billups led all scorers with 21 points and 14 rebounds. White came off the bench to add 11 for the Lancers.
Henriques chipped in 14 points in the victory, while Mitchell ended the night with a career-high 10 points.
The Thundering Herd takes a three day break before returning to action for its season-home-opener on Wednesday, Nov. 17, against USC Upstate. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., at the Cam Henderson Center.
