Late Surge Not Enough as Miami (Ohio) Defeats Marshall, 56-49

Nov. 16, 2011

HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Despite being down 16 points at one point in the game, the Marshall Thundering Herd trimmed the Miami University lead to only six with 49 seconds left in the contest, but the RedHawks would run out the clock in the end and take home a 56-49 victory.

Marshall moved to 1-1 on the season, while Miami rolled to 1-1 with the win.

The Herd had opportunities from the floor to earn points, but a 29 percent field goal average and a 11.9 percent three point average for Marshall proved to be the difference. Marshall finished 2-for-17 from behind the arc and had only 20 of 69 shots fall.

For Miami, Courtney Osborn was a game-changer, finishing with 17 points and adding ten points from the free-throw line.

Marshall did an excellent job spreading the ball around, marking 11 players with point totals, but no player reached double-digit point counts. Shynisha Johnson and Suporia Dickens had the highest total points with eight each.

“I didn’t think we played very well offensively,” commented Head Coach Royce Chadwick after the game. “I thought defensively we put them at the line too many times. They are a veteran basketball team. They did not make many mistakes. We were hoping we could force them into more errors.”

The Herd’s best opportunity came late in the second half when Marshall narrowed the score to 51-45 with 3:57 left after Lateidra Elliott hit a three pointer. Miami would respond with a jumper each time the score was close until finally Johnson made a layup to bring the deficit back to just six again at 55-49 with 49 seconds left. However, Miami would control the ball in the final seconds and run out the clock for the win.

“We had some opportunities down the stretch, when we were making a run to get back into the game. It seemed like we were just one play away. We would get a really good look near the basket and it would just rim out,” said Chadwick.

Defensively the team finished with nine steals and forced 21 turnovers. Johnson led the team in steals with three. On the boards, Marshall out-rebounded Miami 42-39 and Shay Weaver and Alyse Poindexter had the most grabs with six a piece.

Marshall will travel be on the road this Saturday, taking on Ohio. The game is slated to start at 2:00 p.m. ET.
