HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's basketball fell to Ohio, 55-48, on Saturday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd dropped to 5-5 with the loss, earning its first defeat at home. The Bobcats improved to 4-5, recording its third win in a row.
"It's a disappointing loss," said head coach Matt Daniel. "It's disappointing from many facets. We have to quit shooting ourselves in the foot. We started without point guard Norrisha Victrum, who was suspended for the first half for violations of program standards.
"We hurt ourselves in the second half with a lack of execution," continued Daniel. "We had ten points in the first four minutes of the game and 38 in the last 36. That's not exactly what we are looking for. That's a point a minute and that's not efficient enough."
Shay Weaver led Marshall with 13 points, going 5-for-13 from the field. She also led Marshall in rebounds, totaling eight boards.
Chukwuka Ezeigbo followed with 10 points, finishing 5-for-9 from the field. She led the Herd defense with four blocks and two steals.
Marshall out-rebounded the Bobcats, 37-36, but the defeat marks the first time the Herd has lost when earning more boards than its opponent this season.
The Bobcats were led by Erin Bailes, who finished 6-for-8 in three-pointers and used her accuracy from behind the arch to secure the Ohio lead late in the game. Kiyanna Black followed with 16 points and added three steals.
Marshall jumped to an early 12-2 lead to start the ball game. Ezeigbo went 5-for-5 from the field in the first four minutes, earning all of her total points during the span.
The Bobcats responded with an 8-0 run, keeping Marshall scoreless for over five minutes to trim the Marshall lead to 12-10. Black netted 10 of Ohio's first 14 points.
Ohio brought the game to within one point three different times with under six minutes left in the period and took its first lead at 24-22 with thirty seconds left from a made three-pointer by Bailes.
A layup by Suporia Dickens with seven seconds left in the first half allowed Marshall to tie the game, 24-24, at halftime.
Ohio earned the lead early in the second half and Marshall chased it down for the first six minutes of the period.
With under eight minutes left in the game, Weaver put in a fast-break layup to top off a 6-0 run and tie the game at 39-39. Ruiz helped Marshall go back on top for the first time in twenty minutes after capitalizing on an and-one situation, taking a 42-41 advantage.
Ohio immediately responded with one of Bailes' three-pointers along with a steal on the next posession that turned into two quick points by Black, allowing Ohio to take the lead back 46-42.
The Bobcats took its largest lead of the game with three minutes left after another Bailes' three-pointer made the Marshall deficit, 47-53. Marshall trailed by at least two possessions for the remainder of the contest and Ohio took home the 55-48 win.
Marshall will be back in the Cam Henderson Center for the next two games. The Herd will play Furman at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 20.
