Marshall Women's Basketball Postgame Quotes

Dec. 19, 2013

Recap |  Final Stats

Matt Daniel, head coach
Opening Statement
“I’m pleased to come out with a win. We’re a team that is just trying to survive right now. We’re without Chukwuka Ezeigbo and Erica Woods goes down. They think Woods may have broken her foot. We don’t know for sure. We’ll try to get it X-rayed this afternoon. She is really point-tender. We have kids playing out of position and we’re just trying to compete. I thought we did a great job in the second half. We knocked down free throws today. I thought we did a better job on the glass. They were up by seven or eight at the half. We did a better job in the second half, but that’s just competing. I had Norrisha Victrum at the bottom of a zone. It’s not about anything we did any different. It’s just competing. Chelsey Romero almost had another double-double. Victrum had a great stat line. We got good numbers from AJ Johnson. I thought this was a good team win.”

On the decision to drive the ball and not settle for jump shots
“We talk about everything. We talked about not giving up baseline and they drove baseline. We talked about not settling for mid-range jump shots and we settled for that in the first half, but the second half we kind of bowed our neck on both ends of the floor and on the glass. We were better for it.”

On Erica Woods’ injury
“On injuries, I never really say a word to the players. We don’t know for sure if it’s broken or not. I’m big on coaching the next play and what am I if I go to the team and say ‘this is what happened on the last play.’ We just move on. Erica knows that. That is no disrespect to her injury that took place.”

Norrisha Victrum, sophomore guard
On opening up the outside game by driving the ball
“I think we have a lot of shooters on the floor. If one person drives and the defense collapses, it gives everyone else an opportunity to knock down the open shot. We have fours that can knock down the shot, we have Chelsey Romero that can knock down the shot. Everyone just loves to shoot the ball and everyone is always in the gym working on their shots. I think once we kick the ball it opens up the shooting game for us.”

On being in position for a jump shot when others are driving
“Coach [Daniel] always tells all of us to be ready to shoot the ball at all times. You never know when the ball is going to come to you. When we see opponents collapse when we drive, we know someone will be open on the perimeter.”

On keeping the composure of the team following Erica Woods injury
“We started to talk to each other more. We encourage each other a lot, huddle up and listen to coach.”

On what was done well, individually
“I think I pushed the tempo today. I think I distributed the ball very well. I didn’t know I had eight assists. When I saw people collapse on me when I drove, I made sure to dish the ball out to open players. It just gave everybody an opportunity to score.”

Chelsey Romero, freshman forward
On keeping the composure of the team following Erica Woods injury
“We just have to stay solid and continue to compete. We have to continue to work hard.”

On what was done well individually
“In the beginning nothing was going my way and I was starting to get frustrated. One of the coaches just told me to keep competing and play solid. I figured out that I had to be more active and get more into the game. I had to let the game come to me.”

On improvements to her game
“I’m more active and more vocal. I worked a lot on my shooting and my work on the block as well.”
