Marshall Holds On for a 73-68 Win Over Tennessee Tech|

COOKEVILLE, TENN. – After taking over the lead in the first few minutes of the game, Marshall women’s basketball never relinquished control and finished with a 73-68 win over Tennessee Tech.
The Herd moved to 8-3 for the year, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 4-9.
Three Marshall players including Erica Woods, Jasmine Shaw and Lateidra Elliott contributed a team-high 12 points each. Shaw finished 5-for-6 from the field and added three rebounds and a steal, while Woods had four rebounds and two steals and Elliott totaled three assists.
On the glass, Marshall out-rebounded Tennessee Tech 44-33. The Herd has bested their opponents on the board in nine of the ten games played so far this season. Victoria Wells and Leandra King led the team with six rebounds each, while Shay Weaver earned five boards.
Alaya Mitchell led the defensive effort with four steals, while Marshall as a whole had 12 steals and forced the Golden Eagles to commit 17 turnovers. As the number one team in Conference USA in 3-point defense, Marshall contained TTU to only a 1-for-11 mark from behind the arc.
Marshall controlled the tempo of the first half, forcing the Golden Eagles to make only seven baskets from the field and tally a 25.9 percent average. On the opposite end of the court, Marshall made 14-of-31 from the field to take a 37-25 lead in the opening period.
Jasmine Shaw contributed nine points in the first half, marking a flawless 4-for-4 from the field, while Alaya Mitchell earned two steals and Victoria Wells grabbed four rebounds off the board. As a team, the Herd out-rebounded Tennessee Tech 25-18 in the first twenty minutes.
In the second half, Tennessee Tech trimmed the Marshall lead to 63-59 with 2:54 left in the game. However, Lateidra Elliott added six points in the final minutes to help the Herd finish 73-68.
In the second period, the Herd added 17 points from the free throw line, going 17-20 at the charity stripe.
