Marshall Women's Basketball Postgame Quotes
Navy 72, Marshall 68
Dec. 29, 2013
Matt Daniel, head coach
"We're bound to catch a break. We found out this morning that Erica Woods wasn't going to be able to play. We're going to keep evaluating her and you would have to talk with the training staff about how they want to handle that. That changed up our starting lineup. I'm stung by the loss, but I thought our kids, dealing with everything that we've dealt with, really battled. We were down 10 points with under two minutes left in the game and we cut it to a three-point game. They hit a couple shots and we didn't hit a couple of shots. Things happen. I didn't think we played well the first five minutes of the game or the first five minutes of the second half or you have a chance to blow out a back-to-back-to-back NCAA tournament team on your home floor to close out the new year before we play Davis & Elkins obviously. You can feel it coming. In the dressing room you could feel it coming. I'm probably the one that is stung by the loss the most. We fought through this and that. Chukwuka Ezeigbo showed up right before the tip off. Erica Woods went down this morning and we still had a chance to win the game at the end."
On taking 24 three-point shots
"In a game where the opponent is collapsing on the penetration and we're not getting a lot of foul calls to the basket, we do shoot it a little bit. I didn't think we guarded well to start the game. We didn't rebound very well. We were down 8-to-1 in rebounds to start the game at the first media timeout. We flipped it the rest of the first half and I didn't think we started very well in the second half. Other than that it is a different ball game. They missed some free throws late and we missed a couple of box outs late. We didn't get shots to fall. We make a run and I thought we were going to make our own break today. At some point it is going to pay off. Like I said on the radio, I don't know if I'm going to be dead and gone by then, but at some point it will pay off for us. You can feel it coming."
On Navy's free throw troubles
"We knew we could play it to our advantage, but we had to rebound the ball, too. We are a little bit undersized right now. Chelsey Romero earned another double-double today (16 points, 10 rebounds) after being named Conference USA Freshman of the Week last week. As our young ones grow, so will our program. You can feel it, but I don't know when it's going to come. We have so much going on in our program right now. We have child and another on the way. We're building a house and have had so much adversity with our team. We've had injuries, deaths in families and having to reschedule a game. I'm ready to see 2014. We're prepared for just about anything."
Chelsey Romero, freshman forward
On the progression of her game
"It's been a great opportunity and I know what I have to do for my team. At the end of the day if we lose a player we just have to keep playing. We're in this together."
Norrisha Victrum, sophomore guard
On matching up against Navy's Kara Pollinger
"She shoots the ball very well and I had to try to force her into doing things that she typically doesn't do. I tried to get her to drive the ball more because she is an excellent shooter. She's an outstanding player, so it was a good match up. Erica Woods was supposed to be guarding her, but when we found out Erica couldn't go it became my job. I just had to step up and play defense on her. She will probably going to be one of the best point guards we will play all season and I knew that."
