Marshall Women Fall to Miami, 73-56
OXFORD, Ohio – Miami (Ohio) received solid performances from Colleen Day (21 points) and Cindi Merrill (19 points) to run away from the Marshall Thundering Herd women’s basketball team 73-56 at Millett Hall on Wednesday.
Miami (15-6, 9-1 Mid-American Conference), winners of 11 of its last 14 games, dropped Marshall (12-9, 4-6 MAC) for the 14th consecutive meeting. Overall, the RedHawks have won seven straight games, tying Miami’s mark for consecutive wins under head coach Maria Fantanarosa.
Marshall found itself down by as many as 19 points at 6:56 of the first half thanks in part to 12 turnovers. But Royce Chadwick's squad battled back to end the half on a 16-7 run to enter the break down 10 points at 39-29.
Miami came out on fire in the second half (19-4 run) and led by as many as 29 points in the second frame. Marshall scored only four points through the second half’s first ten minutes.
Day finished 7-of-12 and Merrill 6-of-12, including 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Marshall’s Teyonka Hodge (Washington, D.C.) led the Herd with 11 points, while Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) scored nine points to give her 800 for her career.
Miami forward Kim Lancaster was limited to only seven points after scoring a season-high 25 points on Marshall in the first meeting.
For the game, Marshall shot 31.7 percent to the RedHawks' 36.2 percent.
Miami is 8-1 at Millett Hall this season and leads the all-time series with Marshall, 15-2.
The Herd will return to action on Saturday when they visit the Rockets of Toledo for a 4:30 p.m. tip-off.
