Women's Basketball Faces SMU in First Round|

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After finishing the regular season as the No. 7 seed, Marshall women’s basketball will face SMU in the first round of the Conference USA Championships on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. ET. The game will take place in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse in Memphis, Tenn.
Marshall (16-13, 7-9 C-USA) finished the regular season with a 69-60 win over UCF in Orlando, Fla. Freshman guard, Shay Weaver, led the Herd with a season-high 15 points that earned her C-USA Freshman of the Week honors.
The Herd is led by Lateidra Elliott off the bench with 7.3 points per game. She closed the regular season with a team-high 212 points after only averaging 15.6 minutes per game. Erica Woods follows with 6.6 points per game and is leading on the boards with 6.3 rebounds per game.
SMU (13-16, 6-10 C-USA) enters the tournament as the No. 10 seed. The Mustangs ended the regular season with a 61-57 loss on the road to Tulsa. Prior to the loss to the Golden Hurricane, SMU broke a six-game losing streak with a 54-49 win over Tulane on Feb. 26.
The Mustangs have a highly accurate offense that is shooting nearly 40.0 percent from the field for the season and ranks second in three-point percentage and free throw percentage in the league. On the opposite side of the court, SMU struggles on defense and is allowing opponents 38.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent in three-pointers, two of the worst defensive percentages in the conference.
Junior guard Alisha Filmore and sophomore forward Akil Simpson lead the team with 10.6 points per game. Simpson, who just recently was named to the All-C-USA second team, also leads the team with 45 steals and 211 rebounds (7.3 per game). She is also shooting 52.8 percent from the field for the season and has 82 made free throws. Filmore leads the team in assists with 78 and marks a team-leading 77.6 percent average in free throws. She has made 32 three-pointers and posts a 41.6 percent average in three-pointers.
