HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Four 2013 NCAA Tournament participants, four 2013 conference tournament champions and seven 2013 WNIT participants highlight the Marshall women’s basketball 2013-14 regular season schedule, announced Friday.
"As you look up and down our schedule, you can see how competitive we want to be the teams that went to post-season play,” head coach Matt Daniel said. “Our league has also added some of the nation's best, which will also be challenging for our youth and inexperience. Yet, I am still excited to see where we stack up."
The Thundering Herd opens the season at Cam Henderson Center with an exhibition game against Kentucky Christian Nov. 4. To begin the regular season, Marshall will host Bluefield College (Nov. 8), then travel to Coraopolis, Pa., to take on Robert Morris (Nov. 12). The Herd leads the all-time series against the Colonials, 9-2, winning the last meeting in 2006, 72-64.
To follow, Marshall has a six-game home stretch, hosting Morehead State (Nov. 18), Indiana State (Nov. 24), Southern Illinois (Nov. 27), Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 3), Davis & Elkins (Dec. 7) and WVU Tech (Dec. 9). The Herd faced Indiana State and Southern Illinois on the road in non-conference play last season, dropping the game versus the Sycamores, 55-49, and winning versus the Salukis, 70-66.
After the home series, the Herd will play in the annual Capital Classic at Charleston Civic Center, a doubleheader with the Marshall men’s squad, for the 53rd meeting with in-state rival West Virginia Dec. 14. The Mountaineers fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season to No. 6 seed Delaware.
Non-conference play ends with 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Navy and a first-time meeting in Newark, N.J., with GWC Tournament champion NJIT.
Conference-USA play opens with home games versus Tulane (Jan. 8) and UAB (Jan. 11), both 2013 WNIT participants. Further C-USA competition includes first-time meetings with six of the eight new members, including North Texas (Jan. 15), Louisiana Tech (Feb. 8), Charlotte (Feb. 15), Middle Tennessee (Feb. 19), Florida Atlantic (Feb. 26) and UTSA (March 5). Marshall last faced new C-USA members Old Dominion and FIU in 1998 and 2004, respectively.
