HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women’s basketball rookie shot blocker Ashley Saintigene was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Saintigene continues to be a shot blocking and rebounding force for the Herd. The forward recorded five more blocks during the previous two games, and has registered at least one swat in every game. She has had two or more blocks in seven out of nine games this year. Her 22 this season puts her just seven away from already getting into the Top-20 for a single season in Marshall history.
The Herd record for most blocked shots in a single season belongs to Sharon Deal with 117 in 1988-89.
At UNC (Dec. 7), Saintigene was one point away from her first career double-double as she finished with a team high 11 rebounds and nine points. Six of her rebounds and all nine points came in the second half as she put the team on her shoulders to attempt to come back against the Tar Heels. She shot 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the floor and had two blocks.
At home against Bluefield College, Saintigene grabbed six boards and scored six points. But the Herd’s shot-block leader recorded three more rejections in the win.
Saintigene is second on the team with 62 rebounds (6.9 per game). She has worked both the offensive and defensive glass this season as the freshman forward has 32 offensive boards and 30 defensive. Saintigene has scored 49 points while shooting 51.2 percent (22-of-43) from the floor.
