Marshall Set to Contest Ball State on New Year's Eve|

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – As the 2011 year comes to a close, the Marshall women’s basketball team will celebrate the new year with a game against Ball State in Muncie, Ind. The competition is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. ET.
This will be the 15th meeting between the two programs. Ball State holds a 10-4 advantage over the Herd and maintains a 6-0 record against Marshall in games held in Muncie, Ind.
Marshall enters the game with a 8-3 record after knocking off Tennessee Tech, 73-68, on Wednesday. Three Marshall players including Erica Woods, Jasmine Shaw and Lateidra Elliott scored 12 points each to help the Herd claim the best start to a season since entering the Conference USA.
Jasmine Shaw leads the Herd with 8.1 points per game. The sophomore guard boasts a 51.6 percent average from the field, going 33-for-64 for the season. Elliott follows with 6.9 points per game after shooting a conference best 47.8 percent mark from beyond the arc . The senior guard also claims a third place spot in C-USA standings in free throw percentage with a 79.3 percent average.
Woods joins Elliott in the same category, recording a second place standing in the conference in free throw percentage with a 82.1 percent average. Woods leads the team in rebounds with 69, while Leandra King follows closely with 63 boards. Marshall has out-rebounded its opponents in every game but one.
Ball State comes into the game holding a 5-7 record. The Cardinals last game resulted in an 80-39 road loss to No. 14/18 Wisconsin-Green Bay. For the game junior guard Shanee' Jackson led the team in scoring with nine points while teammate sophomore forward Katie Murphy chipped in eight points on the night. Defensively freshman guard Shelbie Justice led Ball State with six rebounds.
Brittany Carter leads the Cardinals in points (114), steals (20), and blocks (10), while totaling 36 assists and recording a 40.4 percent average in three-pointers and a 91.3 percent mark at the charity stripe. Jazmin Hitchens follows with 11.1 points per game, while contributing nine blocks and 38 rebounds.
