HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Thundering Herd (5-6, 0-0 C-USA) will conclude 2013 play when it hosts a rescheduled matchup on New Year’s Eve with Davis & Elkins (2-9, 1-0 G-MAC), Tuesday, at 2 p.m. at Cam Henderson Center.

Conference USA Freshman of the Week Chelsey Romero (Hampton, Va.) recorded a career-high 16 points with her second double-double in a close battle with Navy, Sunday afternoon, but a late rally did not prove to be enough as Thundering Herd fell to the Midshipmen, 72-68, at Cam Henderson Center.

For the third consecutive game (and fourth of the last five games), three Herd players found double figures with Romero’s 16, AJ Johnson’s (Silver Spring, Md.) 15, and Norrisha Victrum’s (Columbia, S.C.) 11. Victrum has finished in double digits in Marshall’s last four games. Romero pulled down 10 rebounds to complete her double-double.

Tuesday’s game against Davis & Elkins was originally to be played Dec. 7, but due to a power outage at Cam Henderson Center, it was postponed and rescheduled.

When playing on Dec. 31, the Herd is 3-3 all-time. The last time Marshall played a game on New Year’s Eve was in 2011 when it defeated Ball State, 60-58, in Muncie, Ind. Marshall is 1-0 when playing in Huntington on this holiday.

1987-88 – W, neutral site, Robert Morris, 64-56
1991-92 – L, at Mercer, 71-56
1996-97 – L, at Buffalo, 55-70
2003-04 – L, neutral site, Mississippi, 54-53
2009-10 – W, Radford, 70-66
2011-12 – W, at Ball State, 60-58

Coach Matt Daniel has started six different combinations over 11 games, and each of the Herd’s five wins have come with different starting lineups. No Herd player has started every single game for Marshall so far, however, junior Leah Scott (Detroit) has started all but one game.

For the first time in coach Matt Daniel's two seasons, Marshall won back-to-back games, defeating Wofford, 71-56 (Dec. 19), and Delaware State, 62-47 (Dec. 21). The Herd’s last winning streak came in February 2012, when Marshall defeated Memphis, 65-54 (Feb. 16), and UAB, 40-37 (Feb. 19).

Chelsey Romero (Hampton, Va.) earned her first Conference USA Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week honor for the week Monday, Dec. 23. This is the first conference weekly award earned in coach Matt Daniel’s two seasons. Romero is the second Herd player ever to earn the honor, with the last being Shay Weaver who earned the award twice in 2012 (Feb. 20, March 2).

The 6-1 forward helped lead Marshall to back-to-back victories for the first time under Daniel, averaging 11.5 rebounds per game over two games. Against Wofford (Dec. 19), she scored 10 points, had nine rebounds and shot .417 from the field. She tied her career high with 14 boards versus Delaware State (Dec. 21) and matched her best performance of three blocks in both games.

For the Herd’s past five games, Romero has stepped into the starting lineup to play for junior center Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) who is out of the country with a family emergency.

Sophomore guard Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.) has made quite an impact for the Herd of late, as high-scorer for three Marshall’s last four games. Notably, her career-high 24 points against Wofford (Dec. 19) are the most scored by a player in coach Matt Daniel’s two seasons and are the most by a Herd player since Tynikki Crook scored 25 in a 71-67 home win over Cleveland State, Dec. 18, 2010. Her eight assists and 12-made free throws versus Wofford are also single-game highs under Daniel. Since Dec. 14, over a four-game span, Victrum is 30-of-36 from the free throw line.

Davis & Elkins (2-9, 1-0 G-MAC) is looking to snap a two-game losing streak when it arrives in Huntington, Tuesday. Stephanie Wooten leads the Senators with 12.2 points and 2.7 assists per game.

Marshall is unbeaten versus the Senators, leading the all-time series, 2-0. Tuesday’s meeting marks the first face-off between the teams in 26 years, when the 1987-88 Herd soundly defeated the Senators, 101-50.

Marshall will play its first away game in 54 days at NJIT, Sunday, Jan. 5, in Newark, N.J. For all the latest information about Herd women’s basketball, follow @HerdWBB on Twitter.
