SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Improving by three strokes from Round 1, Marshall women’s golf earned its best finish of the 2013-14 campaign by reaching third place on the podium at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate at Highlands Golf Course in Sevierville, Tenn.

The Thundering Herd tied with Indiana State University with a 63-over-par 631 mark, six strokes behind winner Eastern Kentucky, which posted a 57-over 625 total. Marshall’s third-place finish is a team-best since taking the title at the Wendy’s Invitational in Charleston, S.C., Oct. 18, 2011.

For the second consecutive day, Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio) led Marshall into the Top 5, finishing in a tie with two other golfers at an 11-over 153 total. Sarah Helly (Enniscrone, Ireland) also posted a Top-10 finish as part of a four-way tie for 10th at 14-over 156. Korakot Simsiriwong (Narathiwat, Thailand) sunk one of the tournament’s two eagles, and Helly put up the event’s second-most birdies on the course with five.

Marshall’s final scores are as follows:

Gabby Marcum – T15 (77 – 81 – 158)
Korakot Simsiriwong – T33 (85 – 79 – 164)
Natalie Irwin – 64 (89 – 91 – 180)

Next, Marshall will head to our nation’s capital to compete at the Hoya Invitational, March 31 – April 1.
