WALLACE, N.C. – Marshall women’s golf finished sixth in the UNCW Seahawk Classic on Sunday evening. The Herd combined for a 920 (+56) final tally.
Marshall was led by freshman Korakot Simsiriwong and sophomore Rachel Thompson, who both finished in 16th individually after shooting 221 (+7) for the tournament.
Simsiriwong, Thompson, and fellow teammate Kristyn Morrone shot career personal bests for single rounds during the three-round event.
Simsiriwong finished the final round with a career-best 72, while Morrone also shot a career-best 72 during the second round. Thompson posted a career-best 73 during round one and two.
“I’m so proud and happy for them stepping up when they needed to,” said head coach Meredith Knight Rowsey. “They will have more confidence in themselves going into the end of the season.”
Morrone finished the tournament tied for 31st individually after rounding up the tournament with a combined score of 233 (+17).
Caitlyn Morrone tied for 58th during the tournament after shooting a 245 (+29), while Maria Battaglia finished in 60th with a 248 (+32).
East Carolina took home the championship title after shooting an 866 (+2) for the tournament. The individual winner was James Madison golfer Nicole Sakamoto, who finished the three rounds with a 212 (-4). Sakamoto shot a 70 during the first two rounds and finished the tournament with a 72.
The Thundering Herd will take a two week break before returning to action. Marshall’s next tournament will be the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. on April 14 and 15.
