Thompson in First after Day One at EKU Colonel Classic
Herd tied for seventh in 12-team field
April 4, 2014
RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio) leads the field at the EKU Colonel Classic after shooting a 4-over-par 76 in the first round at Arlington Golf Club in Richmond, Ky.
Led by Thompson, the Marshall women’s golf team sits in a tie with Cleveland State for seventh out of a 12-team field at 41-over 329. Host Eastern Kentucky leads the tournament with a 25-over 313, followed by No. 88 Xavier (GolfStat.com) at 27-over 315.
Thompson tops the individual leaderboard in a tie with Malika Allie of USC Upstate.
“Rachel played steady for the majority of the round,” Marshall coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said. “She said she had never played in wind like this before, so to be where she is tells me that everything is coming together for her.”
The weather proved to be a challenge for the Herd, with high winds and rain serving as obstacles at the par-72, 5,838-yard Arlington Golf Course. Due to the inclement conditions, the tournament format was changed from two 18-hole rounds on the first day to a single round. Play will resume Saturday with a final 18-hole round.
“It was a very tough day with high winds,” Knight Rowsey said. “However, we threw some shots away that we should not have, regardless of the conditions. We have to be on-point tomorrow to move up because the scores will be lower across the board. The girls are focused on what they have to do a better job with tomorrow.”
After the first round, Marshall stands:
Marshall will continue competition tomorrow in the final round, with a shotgun start set for 10 a.m. ET.
