GULF SHORES, Ala. – Senior Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio), shot a 1-over-par 73 to tie for 10th place in the individual field at the 19th-annual Conference USA Women’s Golf Championship, Monday, at Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.
As a team, Marshall carded a 29-over 317 for 13th place in the first round. Tulane topped the leaderboard at 7-under 281, with four of its five players placing in the top 10.
“Today wasn’t really close to what I was hoping for,” Marshall coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said. “Rachel [Thompson] played well, very steady, and I’m glad to see her in it.”
Thompson and Korakot Simsiriwong (Narathiwat, Thailand) combined for two of the round’s three eagles, both on par-5 hole No. 15. The only other player to sink an eagle in the first round was overall leader Fabiola Arriaga of UTSA, also on No. 15. Arriaga leads the field in a three-way tie with Tulane’s Gemma Dryburth and Emily Penttila at 4-under 68.
In the first round, Marshall scored:
“We have a lot to make up for in only two rounds,” Rowsey said. “I know they can do much better than they showed today.”
The Herd will continue competition Tuesday in the second round.
