Marshall Bumps Two Slots, Finishes Fifth|

LEDBETTER, Ky.-- The Murray State Drake Creek Invitational concluded Tuesday, and the Marshall women's golf team finished in fifth place, bumping up two places following its best round of the invitational.
Home team Murray State did not give up the lead that it took early in Round One, finishing the tournament with a 23-over-par score of 887 after shooting a 295 (+7) in the final two rounds. Western Kentucky and Belmont University took second and third with scores of 915 (+51) and 922 (+58).
The Herd improved round-by-round in the invitational starting with a 325 (+37) in Round One, to a 316 (+28) in Round Two and finishing with its best score 309 (+21). Marshall's final score was tied with Tennessee Tech University at 950 (+86).
The improved round-by-round scores of senior Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio), junior Korakot Simsiriwong (Narathiwat, Thailand) assisted in the team's outcome, as well as their individual finishes. Thompson, who ended tied for 20th after Day One, slid herself into a tie for 10th place after a 72 (+1) Round Three. Simsiriwong shot a 70 (-2) and fell short of first place by four strokes, settling for second.
Marshall passed two teams in Round Two and again in Round Three, moving from ninth to fifth in the two days. Simsiriwong shot twelve birdies in all rounds combined and shared the best par three shooting with Jessica Cathey of Austin Peay State University with a 2.89 (-1).
The squad has a quick turnaround, heading to Simpsonville, Ky. this upcoming weekend for the Cardinal Cup that will be played Sept. 16-17.
