SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -- The Marshall women's golf team concluded the first two rounds of the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Ky. on Monday.
The Cardinal Club's par-72 course proved to be challenging for Thundering Herd, which teed off the 6,271 yard course with an 8:40 a.m. shotgun start. Marshall ended day one in 12th place, with a 32-over-par 645 total score. Host Louisville sits first with a 9-under 567, while Kansas chases the Cardinals with a 5-over 581.
"We had a bit of a struggle today, but these girls will not quit," coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said. "They are grinding every round and will get better."
Junior Sarah Helly (Enniscrone, Ireland) and sophomore Natalie Irwin (Columbus, Ohio) had the most aggressive starts for the Herd with 7-over 79 in Round One. In the second set of 18 holes, Helly shot a 10-over 82 for a combined score of 161, while Irwin finished with a 165 and a 13-over 86 Round Two.
Senior Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio) finished strong after starting with an 11-over 83 on the first 18 holes to a 1-over 73 in the second.
"After Rachel's (Thompson) first hole of the day, she was 8-over. It takes a real player to come back from something like that the way she did," Knight Rowsey added.
The final round will tee off tomorrow with another 8:40 a.m. shotgun start. The Cardinal Cup will continue to have live scoring on golfstat.com, with score updates every three holes.
