Day One: Dayton Fall Invitational
Kettering, Ohio - The Marshall women's golf team has secured a 10th place slot among 18 teams after the first round of the Dayton Fall Invitational Monday. With one competitor in the top 5, the Herd look to improve before the final round of its fall season at NCR Country Club.
The 42-over-par 322 score put the Herd 16 strokes behind first-place school Detroit, which shot a 26-over 306. Dayton trails by four strokes with a 30-over 310 to settle in at second place.
"We obviously struggled again today, but I know we will be better tomorrow," coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said. "The girls are struggling a little with different things like illnesses, inexperience, school pressures and everything is showing in their games right now. We are working hard to learn how to accept adversity and score."
Senior Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio) had the best round of the squad and the 5th best of the tournament. The six-way tie of 5-over 75 is two strokes shy of first.
Thompson contributed three birdies to the Marshall total (5), which has the fifth most in the tournament, thus far.
The team will tee off at 9 a.m. Tuesday for its final round of the tournament and fall season.
After Day 1 on the 5,872-yard course the Herd stands:
Rachel Thompson: T5 (75)
Gabby Marcum: T32 (80)
Ashley DeMoss: T46 (82)
Korakot Simsiriwong: T65 (85)
