HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall’s women’s golf team will compete in its second tournament this week as it travels to Yorktown, Ind. to participate in the 12th annual Cardinal Classic.
The 36-hole tournament will be played at The Players Club, a par-72, 6,258-yard course. There will be 18 holes played on both Saturday and Sunday with action beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. each day.
An 11 team field awaits coach Meredith Knight Rowsey and her Thundering Herd golf team. Along with the host Ball State, the other teams Marshall will go up against are Dayton, IUPUI, Northern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Ohio, Valparaiso, UIC, Western Illinois and Western Michigan.
Marshall’s lineup for the weekend event will include senior Samantha DiDomenico, junior Rachel Thompson, sophomore Korakot Simsiriwong, senior Caitlyn Morrone and senior Maria Battaglia. Kristyn Morrone, a senior will compete as an individual.
This is the Herd’s second tournament this week as they wrapped up the two day Dale McNamara Invitational in Tulsa, Okla. on Tuesday. DiDomenico was the top finisher for Marshall with a 230 (+14).
This is the 12th occurrence for the Cardinal Classic. The tournament has been played since the fall of 2001 with The Players Club serving as the event’s site every year but one.
Southern Illinois, the defending champions do not return to defend their title. The highest team finisher to return are the host Cardinals, which were second in last year’s tournament.
