HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Leigha Holt is the first signee of the 2014 women’s golf recruiting class, coach Meredith Knight Rowsey announced Tuesday.
The Holly Springs, N.C. native is currently a senior at Holly Springs High School.
“I am very excited to be a student athlete for Marshall University, and I look forward to competing on the women’s golf team,” Holt said.
As a freshman, Holt earned second team all-conference. She is a three-time SWAC 8 first team all-conference athlete and three-time Holly Springs High School MVP.
As a junior, she finished 13th in the North Carolina 4A State Championship and tied for third in the N.C. Tournament of Champions.
She boasts a 38 scoring average with an all-time tournament low of 71, thus far.
The four-time N.C. Eastern Regional qualifier, tied for a tournament victory in the N.C. High School Challenge at Campbell University.
Holt is a four-year first team academic all-conference athlete, and earned a spot on the first team all-metro N.C.
In her final high school season, Holt finished 4th as an individual and as a team in the North Carolina 4A State Championship. She received first team all-state honors.
Aside from golf and school, Leigha is very active in her community.
She works with special needs children and recently took them to the Special Olympics. She interns at elementary schools teaching a variety of sports and took on a junior leader role in her church.
“Leigha [Holt] is a truly outstanding young woman, and I am thrilled she has decided to join our program,” Knight Rowsey said. “She got somewhat of a late start in competitive golf, but has been doing everything she needs to do. Her best golf is yet to come. Leigha [Holt] will represent Marshall very well on and off the course.”
