Herd Strong in Exhibition; Defeats VMI 3-0
Marshall women's soccer rookies look sharp

LEXINGTON, Va. - Two freshmen added goals for the Thundering Herd in a 3-0 shutout of VMI in an exhibition match Wednesday at Patchin Field.
Rookie forward Sydney Arnold struck first for Marshall barely a minute into play, landing an unassisted goal off a bad pass out by a VMI defender.
Just before halftime, sophomore striker Erin Simmons put one past VMI goalkeeper Emily Marbury off a steal in the box, giving the Herd a 2-0 lead. Simmons, Marshall's returning leading scorer and Conference USA Preseason Player to Watch, led the team with four shots.
Junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish started the first 45 minutes in the net for the Herd and rookie Danielle Cushing took over at the start of the second half. Cushing made the only save of the match for the Herd, tipping a shot by VMI's Meredith Baldasare in the 56th minute.
In the 85th minute, sophomore midfielder Brittany Entz set up freshman midfielder Kayla Byrnside for an easy chip shot past VMI goalkeeper Liz Nickerson, solidifying the 3-0 victory for Marshall. Byrnside totaled three shots on goal for the match.
The Herd led the Keydets in shots (26-5) and corner kicks (3-1). For VMI, Marbury made two saves while allowing two goals, and Liz Nickerson allowed one goal with five saves.
Marshall enters the final week of preseason and will face Cincinnati in an exhibition match Friday, August 16 at 3 p.m. at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Herd opens the regular season with the inaugural match at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex vs. Campbell Friday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m.
