Herd Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener at Tennessee-Martin in 4-1 Contest

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Marshall women’s soccer team fell at Tennessee-Martin, 4-1, to open up the 2017 campaign on Friday, Aug. 18, at Skyhawk field.
The Skyhawks opened up the scoring in at the 19:24 mark when Kaci Mitchell headed a Katelyn Colvin corner kick into the back of the net to give UT-Martin a 1-0 advantage.
The Herd’s defense would hold UT-Martin scoreless for the rest of the half and the Skyhawks carried a 1-0 advantage after the first half ended. After 45 minutes, the Herd trailed in shots, 9-5 and shots on goal, 3-2, while sophomore Megan Bonelli (Apollo, Pa.) made two saves.
After the second half began, the Skyhawks scored two goals in quick succession in the 54th and 58th minute to make the score 3-0. Marshall scored five minutes later when junior Ashley Seltzer (Knoxville, Tenn.) converted a penalty kick to cut the deficit to two goals. Tennessee-Martin made it a three-goal lead in the 77th minute when Danae Kaldaridou scored her second goal of the contest. The score remained for the rest of the match and the Skyhawks won 4-1.
After 90 minutes, UT-Martin out-shot the Herd, 20-7, and had more shots on goal, 12-3. Bonelli finished the match with eight saves.
The Thundering Herd will return to the pitch when it travels to Murray, Ky., to take on the Murray State Racers on Sunday, Aug. 20, at 3 p.m.
