HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Marshall senior Robin Waskowski scored an equalizer in the 64th minute, but James Madison answered with a golden goal in the 94th to propel JMU to a 2-1 victory over the Thundering Herd Sunday at University Park.
Marshall dropped to 1-1 while James Madison moved to 1-0.
James Madison forward Lauren Wilson scored a goal and recorded an assist in what was the first meeting between the two women’s soccer programs.
After a scoreless first half, Wilson broke the scoring open with a goal in the 54th minute to put the Cardinals up 1-0. James Madison’s lead would be short-lived, however, as senior midfielder Robin Waskowski scored from close range in the 64th minute to bring the game back into a tie. Freshman Jenna Dubs and senior Chelsey Maiden had the assists.
In the final 25 minutes of action, JMU managed three corner kicks and eight shots. Marshall goal-keeper Lindsey Kerns needed to make three saves during that span to force the game into overtime.
During the three minutes and 20 seconds of overtime, the Cardinals took only one shot, a Wilson cross that was redirected into the goal off the foot of midfielder Kelly Germain.
Marshall was outshot 19-10 in the loss, including 13-3 in the second half/ overtime period alone. Kerns made eight saves while her goal-keeping counterpart, Kate Courter, came away with five.
