ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University’s Cat Rogers scored twice Sunday afternoon in women’s soccer action and helped lead the Bobcats to a 2-0 victory over Marshall at Chessa Field.
Marshall dropped to 1-2 on the season while Ohio picked up its first win of the year in its home opener and improved to 1-3.
Rogers, who has scored three of the Bobcats four goals on the season, put Ohio on top early with a goal in the 8th minute of play. Following a corner kick from senior Veronica Rock and a pass inside the box from sophomore Annie Beard, Rogers beat Thundering Herd goalkeeper Lindsey Kerns to the near post for the early lead.
Ohio held onto the single-goal advantage for over two-thirds of the contest until Rogers struck again in the 76th minute on another set play. After committing a foul in its defending third, Marshall saw the senior midfielder deflect a free kick off its wall and into the goal, giving Ohio a 2-0 lead.
Each team took three shots on goal in the contest while Marshall held an 8-7 edge in total shots. The Herd’s Chelsey Maiden was credited with four of her team’s eight shots (one on goal). Rogers also took four shots, finding the back of the net on the two she put on frame.
Marshall earned three corners kicks to Ohio’s two.
