HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A goal from sophomore Gabby Powers and a shutout from sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bonelli helped the Marshall women’s soccer team win its second consecutive game, as it defeated the Ohio Bobcats, 1-0, Friday evening at Hoops Family Field.
With the win, Marshall rose to 2-4 overall, while Ohio fell to 3-3 overall.
After an evenly-contested 30 minutes between the two sides, Powers broke the deadlock at the 33rd minute. Junior Ashley Seltzer intercepted a Bobcats’ pass at midfield and sent a cross into Ohio’s penalty area, which found sophomore Jordan Sackaris. Sackaris then feathered a pass to an open Powers, whose shot found the back of the net and gave Marshall a 1-0 lead. That 1-0 held for the rest of the first half.
At the end of the first half, Marshall out-shot Ohio, 10-7, and had more shots on target by a 6-3 margin, while the Bobcats had a 5-3 save advantage. Eight different players for the Marshall registered a shot in the first half of action.
The second half was reminiscent of the first, with both Marshall and the Bobcats matched each other shot-for-shot. The Thundering Herd almost doubled its lead when a Seltzer free kick found senior Alexa Trevino, but Trevino did not convert. Bonelli was called into action on three separate occasions for the Herd during the half, but she came up big and earned the shutout in the 1-0 victory.
Marshall finished regulation with a 16-14 shot advantage, while both side tallied six shots on goal and three corner kicks.
The Herd will open league play when it travels to Charlotte to take on the 49ers on Friday, Sept. 15, at Transamerica Field at 7 p.m.
