CHARLOTTE – Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bonelli’s 12 saves tied her career-high, but they were not to help the Marshall women’s soccer team overcome the Charlotte 49ers in a 3-0 defeat on Friday, Sept. 15, at Transamerica Field.
It was the second time Bonelli collected 12 saves this season since doing so against Murray State on Aug. 20. Those 12 saves were one short of tying a program record in a single game.
With the loss, the Herd fell to 2-5 (0-1, Conference USA), while 49ers rose to 6-3 (1-0, C-USA).
Two shots in the opening 15 minutes from sophomore Jordan Sackaris and freshman Mary Lawman gave Marshall its best chance of the game, but neither player could find the back of the net. Both sides stayed even until Charlotte’s Martha Thomas broke the deadlock at the 28:01 mark when she put a cross from Megan Greene in the back of the net.
After 45 minutes, the 49ers out-shot the Herd, 9-4, while Marshall had more saves, 4-3, but both sides had four shots on goal each.
Charlotte set the tone in the opening five minutes of the second half when it took three shots to open things up. After setting up the first assist, Greene would get on the scoresheet herself in the 62nd minute when she put away a rebounded shot and made the score 2-0. Thomas put the contest out of hand when she made the score 3-0 in the 83rd minute to collect her 104th and 105th career points.
The 49ers finished the game with a 24-9 shot advantage and a 17-6 shots on goal advantage. Lawman led the Herd with three shots and two on goal.
The Herd will close out its non-conference schedule when it takes on the High Point Panthers on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m.
