HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A game-winning goal from sophomore Jordan Sackaris helped the Marshall women’s soccer team earn its first league of the season, as it defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
With the win, the Herd rose to 3-7 (1-2 Conference USA), while Southern Miss fell to 6-4-1 (0-2-1 C-USA).
Jordan Sackaris scored a pair of goals for the Herd, including the game-winner just 88 seconds into the overtime period. Freshman Rene Ross and sophomore Gabby Powers added a goal each for the Herd. Freshman Molly Preston had two assists.
Neither team possessed a scoring opportunity in the first 30 minutes of the contest. The Herd took a 1-0 lead on Ross’ first collegiate goal, a tap-in at the top of the six-yard box. The Herd took the one-goal lead into the intermission.
The Herd wasted no time in doubling its lead, as Farah Abu-Tayeh found Sackaris for a goal in the 53rd minute. Preston found Powers just 12 minutes later for the third goal of the match. Southern Miss came roaring back with three goals in the final 25 minutes of the second half, tying the match at 3-3.
The Herd needed just 88 seconds of the overtime period to win the match. Sackaris stripped Southern Miss goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich of the ball and tapped in her second of the game to give the Herd a 4-3 win.
Head coach Kevin Long
“We talked as a team about nothing being easy for us this year. We found a little groove early in the second half today and our team mentally checked out and Southern Miss took full advantage of that and the next thing you know, it’s a battle. Give them credit, they’re a dangerous team. I was glad to see Jordan (Sackaris) come out of a scoring slump and play well today. We needed to defend home turf against a conference rival and whether it’s 4-3 in overtime or 3-0 in regulation, we’ll take the win.”
The Herd is back in action Friday evening when it hosts Louisiana Tech at Hoops Family Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
