HOUSTON -- Marshall junior MF Casey Walsh scored her first goal of the season early in the first half, but a penalty kick by Houston forced a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s women’s soccer action at Robertson Stadium.
Marshall (6-7-1, 2-3-1 Conference USA) took its first draw of the season while Houston (4-6-3, 0-2-3 C-USA) stayed winless in league action.
Walsh scored in the 48th minute to break the scoreless tie which had been featured throughout the entire first half, but Houston equalized nearly 30 minutes later (76’) when Marshall was called for a foul in the penalty area.
Cougar junior MF Kylie Cook was chosen for the ensuing penalty kick and converted her first such attempt this season – team’s fourth – to level the contest at one.
Each team had its chances in overtime. Marshall’s opportunity came early on when an awarded corner kick was followed by a shot from senior F Chelsey Maiden. Houston earned its chance with a numbers advantage that saw a goal called back by an offside penalty.
Marshall was outshot 11-4 in the match but held Houston to just two shots on goal. The Thundering Herd put three shots on frame, two of which came from Maiden.
MU will return to the pitch next weekend for home games against Tulsa (Friday) and SMU (Sunday).
