CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Senior Night at Transamerica Field, the Charlotte 49ers downed Marshall women’s soccer, 1-0, Friday.
The Thundering Herd fell to 8-6-2, 3-4-1 in Conference USA play, while Charlotte improved to 9-5-2, 4-2-2 C-USA.
After a scoreless first half, the 49ers struck first in the 47th minute when freshman Ari Reilley scored inside the six-yard box off assists by sophomore Maddie Kiebel and junior Amanda Jones.
Contrary to the typical Herd offense that averaged 14.7 shots per match prior to tonight’s contest, Marshall couldn’t find any firepower, taking only eight shots on the night (two in the second half).
In the final minute of regulation play, the Herd found a prime opportunity to tie things up when Charlotte was called for a foul in the box. Sophomore Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) stepped up for the penalty kick but was unsuccessful, and the 49ers came away with the 1-0 shutout. Simmons led Marshall with three shots, two on-target.
Charlotte goalkeeper Alex Kubrick finished with a blank slate, making three saves, including the PK. Herd goalkeeper Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) made six saves and took one goal against her.
Marshall trailed in shots, 17-8, and led corner kicks, 7-4.
Next, Marshall returns home for Senior Day versus Tulsa, Sunday, at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
