Herd Makes History with First-Ever Postseason Win
Marshall defeats Rice in C-USA Tournament first round, 3-1
Nov. 4, 2013
HOUSTON – Three Marshall women’s soccer players scored their first goals of the season in a 3-1 history-making victory over the Rice Owls, Monday evening, in the Conference USA Tournament first round.
The win marks the first postseason victory in program history for the East Division No. 5 seed Herd (10-6-3). Prior to tonight, Marshall was 0-2 all-time in conference tournament play, and the last time the Herd extended its season was in 2010, when Marshall dropped a 3-0 decision to Houston (Nov. 3, 2010).
“We played well out of the gate,” Marshall coach Kevin Long said. “It was 40 minutes before Rice took its first shot, and we just kept pressure on from the very beginning.”
The Herd stepped onto the pitch with some ferocity – at the eight-minute mark, junior midfielder Chelsea Stalter (Strongsville, Ohio) took a shot that hit the crossbar, and struck again two minutes later for her first career goal, putting the Herd up, 1-0. Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) set up the goal at the 18-yard line, securing her second assist of the season.
That lead held for the next 50 minutes until Rice sophomore forward Holly Hargreaves took a shot between two Herd defenders straight into the net for the equalizer. Junior midfielder Quinny Truong was credited with the assist.
Two minutes later, the Herd regained the lead when senior midfielder Casey Walsh (Chalfont, Pa.) netted her first goal of the season off an assist by Myka DeMarco (Dallas), then classmate Morgan Cain (Tarentum, Pa.) wrapped things up with an unassisted goal with less than three minutes left in regulation. Cain scored her first goal of the year when she took a shot from the right wing that bounced off the post and into the net.
Marshall outshot the Owls, 21-13, and each team took six corner kicks. Herd junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) came away with three saves and took one goal against her.
Next, Marshall advances to the quarterfinals to take on East Division champion Charlotte, Wednesday, at 8 p.m. in Houston. The 49ers won the earlier meeting with the Herd, 1-0, Oct. 25.
