Women’s Soccer Lands Bumper Crop of Recruits

Marshall University women’s soccer coach Teresa Patterson announced today the signing of eight new players to her program.

“Our staff is very happy with this recruiting class,” Patterson said. “We felt that we met the specific needs left by the departure of our senior class.

“This group will add the additional talent and depth necessary to put us in a position to play for a Championship in 2002.”

The Thundering Herd posted an 11-7-1 record last fall, including a 7-5-1 Mid-American Conference mark. The team will play a five-game spring exhibition schedule beginning on March 23 at South Florida.

Following is a short biography on each of the Herd’s 2002 spring signees.

Ashley Schillig -- Forward, New Albany, OH/St. Francis DeSales HS

Was a four-year varsity player, earning 2001 NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) High School All-America honors. Was the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletics Association) Division I Player of the Year and was Captain of the Central Ohio Super 12 Team. Was selected District player of the Year and First Team All-State. Also plays soccer for the COSA Express along with MU Signee Cara Hemmerich.

Cara Hemmerich -- Midfielder, Dublin, OH/Coffman High School

Was a two-year captain, and four-year varsity player. Was First Team All-OCC, First Team All-District, First Team All-State, and OCC Player of the Year pick in 2001. Named Channel 6 Scholar Athlete of the Week. Selected to the Central Ohio Super 12 and was an All-America Nominee. Her team won four District Championships, two Regional Championships and the 2001 Division I State Championship. Helped the COSA Express club team to the OSYSA State Championship in 2000 and were runner's up in 2001. She is third athlete to play soccer for Marshall from Dublin Coffman, joining Lindsey and Allison Jayjack.

Jaime Gruber -- Forward, Hudson, OH/Hudson High School

Was a second team All-State selection in 2001. Was named Western Reserve Conference MVP, and was selected first team All Conference three times as well as twice being named first team All-District, and Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon-Journal All-Star. Was Hudson's leading scorer with 20 goals and seven assists and was also a Scholar-Athlete. She was named team offensive MVP in 1999 and was the squad’s leading scorer in 1998. While at Hudson, her team won the Division I State Championship in 2000 and were State Runner-up in 2001 and 1999. She plays club soccer for the Internationals coached by Zdrafko Popovich. The Internationals were 2000 National Finalist, 2000 and 1999 Midwest Region Champions, Ohio North State Champions from 1998-2001, and have been National Indoor Champions six times.

Morgan Church -- Forward, Hagerstown, MD/Smithsburg High School

Leading scorer for Maryland State Champion Team in 2001. Was the area’s leading scorer and was selected All-County, All-Area and All-MVAL Conference her final two seasons. Plays club soccer for the Frederick United Express.

Jorie Grundstrom -- Forward, Maplewood, MN/White Bear Lake High School

Was a four-year varsity starter, a captain her junior and senior seasons, and was named All-Conference, and Defensive Player of the Year. Plays club soccer for the Twin Cities Fire.

Megan Jenkins -- Defender, Dayton, OH/Fairborn High School

First Team MML (Mid-Miami League) in 2001. Was also a first team All Area pick as well as team MVP. Earned the Fairborn Athletic Boosters Club of Excellence Award. Was a first team WOL (Western Ohio League) pick in 2000 as well as second team All-Area. Plays club soccer for Dayton Galaxies F.C. coached by Kevin Arcurri.

Kai Nordness -- Goalkeeper, Burnsville, MN/Burnsville HS

Was a team captain as a senior, and was a three-time all-conference selection. Was also captain of the track team as well as All-State in track. Plays club soccer for the St. Paul Blackhawks, a Minnesota ODP participant.

Jen Short -- Midfield, Mentor, OH/Mentor High School

Wan an All-Conference team pick as well as being named to play in the All-Greater Cleveland All-Star game. Was a third-team All-Greater Cleveland pick, team captain, and a three-time Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Week. Plays club soccer for International Soccer Club (along with fellow signee Jaime Gruber).
