Women's soccer fall schedule
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall women’s soccer coach Kevin Long announced the dates and times for the 2013 women’s soccer schedule. The Thundering Herd will get the action started with a pair of exhibition matches, the first coming on Wednesday, Aug. 14 with a trip to Lexington, Va., to take on VMI.
After facing Cincinnati in another exhibition match on Sunday, Aug. 16 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Herd will welcome Campbell to Huntington on Friday, Aug. 23 to commence action at the new Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. The game will kick off a four-game home stand in which Marshall will also host Kent State, JMU, and Akron. The Herd went 1-3 against the four opponents last season, picking up a 2-0 victory on the road at Akron.
The Herd will face two nonconference opponents who went undefeated in conference play and reached the NCAA tournament last season. Marshall will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to play a La Salle team that posted a 17-5-1 record last season and went undefeated in Atlantic 10 play (8-0-1) en route to winning the conference championship. The Explorers lost to Virginia 4-1 in the first round of the 2012 NCAA tournament.
Marshall will meet up with its old Mid-American Conference foe the Miami Redhawks at home to round out nonconference play on Sunday, Sept. 22. The Redhawks advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA tournament before falling to Duke by a score of 4-1. The loss ended an impressive season in which Miami went 20-3-1 overall and stayed undefeated in MAC action with a 10-0-1 record.
Marshall will kick off play in a revamped Conference USA with a home matchup against first-year C-USA member Old Dominion on Friday, Sept., 27. The Herd will face six new conference opponents, hosting ODU, Florida Atlantic, and Middle Tennessee State, and travelling to Louisiana Tech, Charlotte, and Florida International. It will be the first meeting between Marshall and all six new C-USA schools.
Florida International and Middle Tennessee State come to C-USA after successful 2012 seasons in the Sun Belt conference. Both teams went 8-1-1 in league play, with FIU (13-6-2) falling 1-0 in the tournament championship after defeating Middle Tennessee State (14-5-1) in the semifinals.
The Herd will compete against returning conference foes UAB and Tulsa in Huntington and will take to the road to face Southern Miss and East Carolina. In 2012, Marshall picked up 3-2 and 1-0 victories against UAB and Southern Miss respectively. The Herd fell 2-0 to Tulsa and dropped an overtime contest against East Carolina 1-0 in its 2012 season finale. Tulsa reached the Conference USA tournament championship last season but fell to UCF 2-0.
Marshall will welcome back seven starters, including third-team All-Conference USA honoree Erin Simmons, who also earned a spot on the 2012 All-Freshman team. Simmons’ six goals were tied for a team high last season, and three of them were game-winning tallies. Junior Casey Walsh and freshman Jenna Dubs return to the field after starting all 19 games for the Herd last season.
