Women’s Soccer to Lace Up for Exhibition Contest at Eastern Kentucky
It will be the first of two exhibition games before the 2017 regular season
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women’s soccer team will kick of its 2017 preseason by traveling to Richmond, Ky., to take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the EKU Soccer Field at 6 p.m.
HAVE YOU HERD
The Marshall Thundering Herd is coming off a 2016 season in which it narrowly missed the Conference USA tournament after finishing ninth overall.
Last season, Marshall finished the year with a 6-7-4 (4-4-2 C-USA) overall record and a ninth-place finish in the league, narrowly missing the C-USA Tournament. The Herd had two players on the All-C-USA team, Sydney Arnold (2013-16) and current sophomore Jordan Sackaris.
This season, the Herd was predicted to finish ninth in the preseason poll, the league announced Monday.
SCOUTING THE COLONELS
EKU completed the largest turnaround in the NCAA last season, improving from 4-14-0 in 2015 to 13-5-1 in 2016. The Colonels won a share of their first-ever Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular season title and advanced all the way to the OVC Championship game before falling to SIUE, 1-0.
OVC Coach of the Year Nick Flohre returns several key players from last year's championship team, including first team All-OVC forward Jordan Foster, who broke the single-season program records for goals (eight) and assists (five) in 2016, and second team All-OVC goalkeeper Anna Hall, who recorded a program-record 11 shutouts in 2016.
The Colonels were predicted to finish third in the OVC preseason poll.
