HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall University women’s soccer team travels to Lexington, Ky. to participate in the University of Kentucky Tournament, as it wraps up its non-conference schedule this weekend. MU takes on first time opponents Tennessee Tech and Western Kentucky.
The Herd enter this weekends matchups as one of only 10 teams in Division I women’s soccer to be undefeated and untied this season. Marshall is off to its best start in school history and has already accumulated more wins this year than during the 2008 campaign.
The Herd is coming off a one game weekend in which it earned its first ever win over Ohio University (1-4). In the eight previous matchups Marshall had been outscored 25-5, but a late second half goal by Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) led MU to a 1-0 victory. Duncan’s goal was her second game-winner of the season.
MU has pitched six shutouts on the season, and is in the company of only four other schools who have not allowed a goal.
Goalkeeper Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) earned her 14 th collegiate career shutout in the Ohio victory without making a single save.
“This weekend we want to stay strong in the backfield but we really want to focus on taking advantage of scoring opportunities,” head coach Kevin Long said.
The University of Kentucky Tournament is Marshall’s second tournament of the season. The Herd won the Duquesne University Tournament earlier in the year with its first ever victories over Duquesne and Manhattan.
The Thundering Herd opens the tournament at 5 p.m. on Friday night when it faces Tennessee Tech (1-5-1). The Golden Eagles enter the weekend in the midst of a seven match road trip in which they are 1-3-1, with their only victory coming over Alabama State.
Tennessee Tech is coming off a 0-1-1 weekend that included a 0-0, double overtime tie against Belmont and a 2-1, lose over UNC Asheville. Freshman Andrea Meloff (Rochester Hills, Mich.) tallied her team-leading third goal of the season in the loss to UNC Asheville.
Marshall concludes its weekend on Sunday with a noon kickoff against Western Kentucky (4-2). The Lady Toppers went 1-1 last weekend, earning a 1-0, Friday night victory over the University of Evansville and dropping a Sunday afternoon 2-0 match to Southeast Missouri.
Megan Meinke (Leavenworth, Kan.) scored the lone goal of the weekend for Western Kentucky and now has a team-leading two goals on the season.
