Women's Soccer Routs Akron 3-0
The Marshall women’s soccer team (4-4-0, 2-2-0) defeated the University of Akron (2-6-0, 0-4-0) 3-0 today at a chilly Sam Hood Field. The Thundering Herd outshot the Zips 31-6 and held the advantage in corner kicks 6-0.
“It was a conference win,” head coach Teresa Patterson said. “Our ball movement did not give us as many opportunities to score as it should have.”
Marshall’s first goal came in the 29th minute when midfielder Sarah Gupton (Richmond, IN) passed the ball to Kelly Posey (Manassas, VA) who beat Akron’s charging goal keeper for the score.
The next goal did not come until the 78th minute when Amanda McMahon (Stillwater, MN) and Kelly Posey combined to assist Stacy Wells (Monroe, OH) on a goal. Kelly Posey then struck again with her second goal of the evening in the 89th minute. She was assisted by Michelle Losekamp (Arlington, TX).
Akron’s goal keeper Meghan McCarthy recorded 11 saves in the contest.
The Herd plays again on Sunday, September 30, at 2:30 p.m. They will play host to IUPFW. The contest will be a double header with the men’s team, with their game beginning at 12:00 p.m.
